John 21:1-25

Key Verse 21:15


“When they had finished eating, Jesus said to Simon Peter, ‘Simon, son of John, do you truly love me more than these?’ ‘Yes, Lord,’ he said, ‘you know that I love you.’ Jesus said, ‘Feed my lambs.’”


1.      Read v. 1-3. When and where did this event take place? Why were the disciples in that place (Mk. 14:28)? What did Simon Peter suggest they do?  What was the result of their efforts? Why might the disciples have been in despair?


2.      Read v. 4-9. Whom did the disciples meet as they returned? Why didn’t they recognize him? What suggestion did he make? What happened? What did the apostle John realize? What did Simon Peter do? How were the disciples’ broken hearts healed through this event?


3.      Read v. 10-14. How did the Risen Jesus serve them? Why did the Risen Jesus care for them so tenderly? What did it mean for his disciples? How did this point to their true hope in the kingdom of God (Rev. 19:9; 21:3,4)?


4.      Read v. 15-17. What question did the Risen Jesus ask Simon Peter three times? What was Simon Peter’s answer each time? What was the Risen Jesus’ imperative to Simon Peter? Why did the Risen Jesus focus on Simon Peter like this? What did it mean for Simon to truly love Jesus? What did it mean for him to feed Jesus’ sheep?


5.      What can we learn from this conversation about the importance of a love relationship with Jesus? About a decision to serve Jesus’ sheep? What does it mean for you to love Jesus, and to feed his sheep?


6.      Read v. 18-23. What did Jesus teach Simon Peter about the lifestyle of a shepherd? What sacrifice must he be prepared to make? Why can’t he compare his holy mission with anyone else’s? How does this illustrate the importance to any servant of God of a personal love relationship with Jesus?


7.      How can we be faithful and reliable witnesses of Jesus’ death and resurrection (24-25)?
